Math competences and math anxiety

Mathematical skills are essential for life, but many experience mathematics anxiety (MA), a negative reaction that can be debilitating. MA is common from elementary school to university, leading some capable individuals to avoid math-related careers altogether.

Project aims/objectives

  • Raise awareness about maths anxiety among primary and middle school teachers.
  • Create and promote the customizable MathifyMe Digital Game, incorporating learning analytics to reduce maths anxiety and boost student interest.
  • Develop TPD to encourage teachers to use the MathifyMe Digital Game for effective maths teaching.

 

Project results and other outcomes

  • The MathifyMe Digital Game is publicly released.

  • Results of the field tests and a video guide for the game will be published.

  • Teachers (n=100) in participating countries will receive professional development on MA and the MathifyMe Digital Game.

  • The TPD programme will be published for general use.

  • A report and visualized good practices brochure for teachers will be published.

  • Research Report on MA findings in primary and middle schools.

  • MathifyMe Digital Game: customizable online game with learning analytics for teaching maths.

  • Implementation Video-Guide: videos on using MathifyMe Digital Game in classrooms.

Activites

  • Conduct a needs analysis to uncover causes of math anxiety and identify effective practices for lowering it, informing game design.
  • Co-design the game with a multidisciplinary team, incorporating feedback from students and teachers.
  • Create Teachers' Professional Development (TPD) to equip teachers with skills to use and adapt the game.
  • Conduct dissemination activities throughout the project.
