Math competences and math anxiety

The project Making maths more accessible using Game-based learning to create a more inclusive and less stressful environment in the learning of maths (MathifyMe) aims to raise awareness among maths teachers and students about the issue of maths anxiety (MA) and foster more positive attitudes towards teaching and learning mathematics. The goal is to reduce the prevalence of MA in students by providing effective tools and strategies. The central focus is the development of a customizable digital learning game for primary and middle school teachers to support students struggling with MA and promote its awareness.
  • Maths competences are widely recognised as key competences for life
  • However, mathematics and performing in it raises anxious feelings for some: mathematics anxiety (MA)
  • MA is a negative emotional reaction to mathematics that can be debilitating. Several studies indicate that the phenomenon is a very common problem among students from elementary school to universities
  • Intelligent and capable individuals develop a severe avoidance of involving any kinds of mathematics; not choosing careers which include the application of mathematics.
